About Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Technology
Aera Energy’s CarbonFrontier removes CO2 from emissions sources before it is released into the atmosphere. Kern County is well suited for CarbonFrontier due to its favorable geology, existing infrastructure, and skilled workforce.
CarbonFrontier, a proposed CCS project in western Kern County, aims to capture and inject CO2 emissions from existing sources into a permanent underground storage site at Aera’s Belridge oil field. The CO2 will be stored in depleted, natural oil and gas formations. Once operational, it could capture and store up to 1.6 million metric tons of CO2 annually, helping the state achieve carbon neutrality.
